Katarina Witt started to ice skate when she was five years old. Then, her talents became apparent, and at the age of Karl-Marx-Stadt she enrolled in the school that was specifically made for kids with athletic abilities. The school was where she got to know Jutta Muller in this school. Her breakthrough year was in 1982 when she finished second at the World Championships in Copenhagen. The grace and elegant style of Witt captured the eyes of all and she has dominated her sport ever since. Olympic triumph Katarina Wit took home gold in the women's ice skaters during Sarajevo Winter Games 1984. Sarajevo Winter Games 1984 after a highly competitive and intense contest. It was her victory from four years prior that was a lot closer. Free skates were not a success, however her gold medal resulted from the performance she put in both the compulsory figures (short programme) and mandatory figures. Witt was the only female since Sonja Haenie to be a repeat figure skating winner. Hall of Fame Witt was able to return to skating after her accomplishments as a film actress. She competed in Lillehammer Winter Games, 1994. While she was not able to win a medal, Witt impressed her spectators despite finishing seventh. Witt was admitted into the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame in 1995.
